Guys, what does this mean?

so theres a guy that ive been friends with for awhile but recently ive been spending a lot of time with him and am falling for him. we spend a lot of time together in school and he alwys IMs me as soon as I sign on. He also likes to joke around with me a lot nd playfully make fun of me, but he is also so nice and sweet to me. He has asked me who i liked many times and he said he would tell me who he liked so eventually i gave in thinking it was me. and he told me it was some other girl. but recently i asked him if he liked her and he said he didnt know and asked why i cared so much. and i finally gave in and totally spilled how i felt for him because thats what his friends told me to do because they thought it would help to get him to open up to me. but all he replied to me was that "its up in the air, but i dont know im sorry." and then continued to carry on a normal conversation as if i had said nothing of importance. i dont get it iam so confused, idk what to do,i feel awkward now
