A matrices solving question?

There's a way to write two simpler equations out of this problem. I wish I could tell you the order and pattern with which you multiply the rows and columns of that matrix. I forget exactly how its done. Im sure that if you type 'matrix multiplication' into google, you can find a simple explanation for the pattern of multiplication. Use that pattern to write two equations and solve the two equations for a and b.
