Why can't a netting be placed over jet engines to prevent bird ingestion?

Why can't a very sturdy netting or mesh be placed in front of a jet engine so it will not ingest birds...it can be heavy gauge with opening too small to allow a bird through. Seems obvious..what am I missing?
